Senate power will be determined by the races and how far Biden will go on topics such as pandemics, health care, taxation and the environment.
May Asian Americans be critical to the campaign for the Georgia Senate?
In two Senate runoff races that will decide most of Joe Biden’s first term, the campaign continued Saturday in Georgia. “Notwithstanding Donald Trump’s bizarre decision on New Year’s Day to call the runoffs “illegal and invalid,” Tuesday’s contests will determine the Senate’s influence and thus how far Biden will go on topics such as pandemics, health care, taxation, electricity and the environment. Democrat Jon Ossoff and Rev Raphael Waa Kamala Harris, the elected vice president, will then take over as a tiebreaker in the Senate.
Republican incumbents Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue have thrown themselves squarely behind Trump in response to this challenge, making wildly inflated statements about the dangers their opponents supposedly pose: A Democratic Senate will rubber-stamp a “socialist agenda,” from “abolishing private insurance” to “expanding the Supreme Court” to passing a “Green New Deal” in Perdue’s and Loeffler’s view. In addition to misrepresenting Biden’s and other Democratic senators’ political views, the characterization ignores the reality of a Senate in which centrist Democrats and Republicans are set for a key position. Ossoff said that Perdue’s “ridiculous” attacks “blew my mind.” at a campaign stop this week. He also scoffed at suggestions that his policies, which are closely associated with Biden, amount to a left-wing moon lunar.
But he agreed with his rival on how much it matters to Georgia. “We have too much good work to do,” Ossoff said, “to be mired for years to come in gridlock and obstruction. “With his reaction to a Fox News reporter this week, Ossoff also made headlines about Loeffler’s allegations that her rival, Warnock – a pastor of a church formerly led by Martin Luther King Jr. – is “dangerous” and “radical.” Kelly Loeffler has been campaigning with a Klansman. Kelly Loeffler has been campaigning with a Klansman, so she is bowing to these nasty personal attacks to distract herself from the fact that she has been campaigning with a former Ku Klux Klan member. “Kelly Loeffler campaigned with a Klansman. Kelly Loeffler has been campaigning with a klansman and so she is stooping to these vicious personal attacks to distract from the fact that she has been campaigning with a former member of the Ku Klux Klan. ”
“Loeffler responded by calling Ossoff “a pathological liar” and “a socialist trust fund whose only task in recent years was working for the Chinese Communist Party,” a reference to payments from a Hong Kong-Kong corporation to Ossoff’s media business. Perdue entered quarantine this week after exposure to Covid-19. He and Loeffler both face a deepening Republican divide over the reluctance of Trump to admit defeat in the presidential election. Trump has spread false accusations of voter fraud and blasted Georgian Republicans, including Governor Brian Kemp, who defended the democratic process, attacks that led to his Friday night tweet about the runoff’s legality.
Some Republicans have expressed fear that it could discourage loyalists from voting, as Perdue and Loeffler have supported Trump’s statements. ” No Republican is really happy with the situation we are in,” said Chip Lake, Georgia’s long-time Republican adviser. “But sometimes when you play poker, you have to play the hand you’re dealt, and for us, that starts with the president. “Trump is going to visit Georgia on Monday night for a final rally with Loeffler, hours before the polls open.
It’s unclear whether Perdue will participate. Democrats are fine with their opponents’ decision, as over-the-top attacks are run and used by Trump Republicans. “We’re talking about something like Medicaid expansion. We’re talking about expanding Pell Grants” Ossoff said during a recent stop in Marietta, north of Atlanta. “David Perdue denounces these things as socialism? “David Perdue denounces these things as socialism? Bi-support from Ossoff and Warnock
