Up to 100 dead horses have been found on a property north of Melbourne, with Racing Victoria investigating.
The horses are believed to have been brought to the property north of Romsey for disposal after being euthanised, the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and RSPCA say.
Both the council and RSPCA are investigating.
“The site contained discarded building materials as well as between 75 and 100 deceased horses of various breeds in various states of decomposition,” the council said in a statement on Tuesday night.
A spokeswoman could not say when the horses were found but there was no evidence of starvation or other cruelty involved.
Investigators were working with the property owner to ensure proper disposal of the remains and have told them not to collect any more dead stock.
