Sevilla signs Dutch forward Promes in deadline-day move

SEVILLE, Spain – Sevilla signed Dutch forward Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow on a five-year deal, while Real Madrid sent young striker Borja Mayoral to Levante on a loan until the end of the season.

Madrid, which presented forward Mariano Diaz earlier Friday, also announced it reached a deal to end the contract of defender Fabio Coentrao, who joined Rio Ave in Portugal.

Diaz will be wearing the No. 7 jersey that was used by Cristiano Ronaldo before he left to join Juventus.

“I’m proud to be wearing this number,” Diaz said.

Promes was last season’s top scorer in the Russian league with 15 goals from 26 games and scored twice for Spartak against Sevilla in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old left winger was a fan favorite at Spartak after helping the team win the Russian title in 2017. He scored 66 goals in 135 appearances. His departure follows Spartak’s failure to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.

On Twitter, Promes wrote, “thank you for all the beautiful moments that we created together, we achieved things that I’ll never forget.”

Promes has five goals in 28 appearances for the Netherlands.
