Pensioner caused a massive traffic jam by driving his mobility scooter on a MOTORWAY

This is the moment a lost pensioner was given a ticking off by police after causing a massive traffic jam by driving his mobility scooter on a motorway.

The OAP was spotted in the fast lane on the motorised buggy which can only do 6mph.

The man – believed to be 88 – caused motorists to brake suddenly in the Julio Luengo tunnel in Las Palmas on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria.

He had no lights on his electric scooter, nearly causing a crash, as beeping motorists jumped on the brakes on the carriageway.

He was in a hurry to get back to his house and took the shortest route home.

Onlookers called police who dashed to the scene and sealed off the motorway.

They took the pensioner’s details, who was unaware he had committed a crime.

Police did not charge him after deeming he was confused and lost.

Carreteras GC – in charge of the roads on the holiday isle – said police had escorted the man to the exit.

They said: ‘We remind you that pedestrians cannot pass through the tunnels.’
