Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has come under fire after his campaign team posted a photo of tombstones featuring the name of his Democratic opponent Amy McGrath.
His ‘Team Mitch’ re-election campaign team tweeted out the image taken at a campaign event at Fancy Farm, Kentucky over the weekend.
The image featured five tombstones, including one that read ‘R.I.P. Amy McGrath’ and had the death date listed as the 2020 elections.
Merrick Garland, who was President Obama’s final nominee to the Supreme Court but was upended due to McConnell, and Kentucky’s Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergarn Grimes also appeared on the tombstones.
The final two featured ‘socialism’ and the ‘Green New Deal’.
It comes as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hit out at McConnell after a photo surfaced of young men in Team Mitch shirts making choking and kissing gestures towards a cutout of her at the same Kentucky fair where the tombstones were.
McGrath, who was named on the tombstone, is McConnell’s Democratic challenger for the 2020 election. She is a former Marine fighter pilot of Iraq and Afghanistan war veteran.
She too lashed out at the Republican after his campaign team posted the tombstone photo soon after the deadly massacre in El Paso, Texas.
‘Hours after the El Paso shooting, Mitch McConnell proudly tweeted this photo. I find it so troubling that our politics have become so nasty and personal that the Senate Majority Leader thinks it’s appropriate to use imagery of the death of a political opponent (me) as messaging,’ she tweeted.
‘It’s symptomatic of what is wrong with our system. I’m fine with the ordinary rough and tumble of politics, but this strikes me as beyond the pale.’
The Team Mitch tweet was accompanied by the caption: ‘The Grim Reaper of Socialism at #FancyFarm today’.
McConnell has previously said that he was happy to be the grim reaper of liberal proposals.
The tombstone photo is just the latest Team Mitch stunt to cause outrage among Democrats.
Leading the charge was AOC who was outraged when the image of McConnell’s supporters with her cardboard cutout started circulating on social media.
The image, which was posted to Instagram, shows seven men standing around the cutout of Ocasio-Cortez while wearing Team Mitch shirts.
One of them has his hands around the cutout’s waist as he simulates a kiss on AOC’s cheek.
Another man appears to be trying to choke the cutout.
The caption on the Instagram post reads: ‘Break me off a piece of that.’
A furious Ocasio-Cortez responded to the image on Monday, tweeting: ‘Hey @senatemajldr – these young men look like they work for you.
‘Just wanted to clarify: are you paying for young men to practice groping and choking members of Congress with your payroll, or is this just the standard culture of Team Mitch? Thanks.’
The photo quickly went viral after it was shared on Twitter by a woman with the handle ‘feminist next door.’
‘Future federal judges of America,’ the woman tweeted.
The image was taken on Saturday in Fancy Farm, Kentucky, the site of the annual St. Jerome Catholic Church Picnic. The annual event is considered the start of Kentucky’s political campaign season.
It is the second time in as many days that Ocasio-Cortez has taken aim at McConnell on Twitter.
On Sunday, the congresswoman criticized McConnell for not allowing a Senate vote on a bill that would require background checks for those seeking to purchase a gun.
‘The House passed HR8, a Bipartisan Background Checks Act, *5 months ago* and the Senate has yet to vote on it,’ Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.
‘It was one of our 1st major priorities after ending the gov shutdown. You’ve been sitting on it since February giving bogus excuses. Care to explain the people why?’
The tweet was in response to McConnell’s condolence message following the mass shooting in El Paso on Saturday.
‘The entire nation is horrified by today’s senseless violence in El Paso,’ the Kentucky Republican tweeted.
‘Elaine’s and my prayers go out to the victims of this terrible violence, their families and friends, and the brave first responders who charged into harm’s way.’
The Team Mitch Twitter account has also recently tweeted a photo of McConnell with a sling and cast.
McConnell suffered a broken left shoulder after falling in his home over the weekend.
The Senate majority leader also tweeted a photo of his sneaker, which looked as if it ripped apart.
