4.2-magnitude earthquake hits Pacoima area in California

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake of 4.2 magnitude struck about a mile north of the Los Angeles community of Pacoima on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Though relatively small in magnitude, the quake which struck at 4.29 am. Pacific time was felt in much of the Los Angeles area, social media reports said.  Pacoima is about 25 miles northwest of LA.

A USGS map on its website indicated shaking was felt from Palmdale to Anaheim, and from Ontario to Agoura Hills. An intensity map shows the quake’s impact was rated mostly ‘weak’

The quake had started out as a 4.5 magnitude, but was later downgraded.

A second quake of 3.3 magnitude struck nine minutes later, the survey said.

There has been consistent earthquake activity in the area over the past 10 days of at least a 3.0 or greater, the Los Angeles Times reported.

LA and its surrounding area average about five earthquakes between 4.0 and 5.0 every year, based on a three year sample of data.

Reactions to the quake that were posted online wrote off the tremor as harmless, and were occasion for some to laugh off the stress that was avoided from a more serious event.

‘My children are in my arms and we are awake too early because of that earthquake but now they’re discussing how their ninja skills would totally help in this time Rolling on the floor laughing,’ tweeted singer Kelly Clarkson

‘I’m just happy they’re more interested and curious about it and less scared. Hallelujah!’ she added in the social media post.

Khloe Kardashian tweeted a post that made her at first sound a bit more alarmed.

‘Oh man!! Wow that felt much bigger than a 4.5 #earthquake. So scary! Sneakers and my flashlight by my bed,’ she tweeted around 5.30am.

She later tweeted ‘2020 we are tired sis!!!! TIRED!! T I R E D,’ as others did, commenting about being woken up during the early morning hours,

Rapper Cardi B also expressed that the earthquake was the ‘scariest s**t ever,’ in video she posted on social media.

In the footage she vows she’s going back home to New York.
