The reinstatement of roaming charges in the EU has been announced by two of the UK’s top mobile network operators. So, when will you be affected by changes in phone tariffs?

For numerous years, British visitors to the European Union (EU) were allowed to use their mobile phones with relative ease, just as they would at home. However, after the signature of the Brexit deal in December 2020, mobile phone carriers will be able to decide whether or not to resume roaming costs. Following the Brexit vote, Vodafone, EE, o2 and Three stated that they had no plans to reinstate roaming fees in Europe.

However, two of the UK’s largest mobile network providers have decided to reinstate levies.

EE was the first of the major mobile network carriers to declare that roaming costs for its customers visiting Europe would be restored earlier this year.

Vodafone also confirmed last week that roaming costs would be reinstated.

Customers of o2 and Three who go to Europe face data usage restrictions.

From Wednesday, August 11, the rules for new and upgrading Vodafone subscribers will change.

However, until January 2022, the costs will not apply to Vodafone customers visiting EU destinations.

Customers affected by the change will be able to use their monthly amount of calls, texts, and data in Europe for £2 per day, with fair usage limitations of 25GB of roaming data per month.

Customers who purchase a multi-day pass for eight or 15 days will be able to lower the cost to £1 per day.

Customers on Vodafone’s Xtra plan will have their roaming expenses included in their monthly bill.

“Rather than having all of our customers affected by incorporating the additional costs of roaming in all of our rates, customers will be able to choose a plan that includes roaming or purchase an additional roaming pass,” a company spokeswoman stated.

“Our goal is to eliminate ‘bill shock’ when customers travel with Vodafone, therefore all of our plans and passes will have explicit usage constraints, and customers will also be able to establish their own limits using Vodafone Spend Manager, which is free to set up via the My Vodafone App.”

Customers may soon be charged £2 per day while using their phones in a number of European places, according to EE.
