To ensure that electric scooters do not use congested roadways, cycle lanes could be extended.
E SCOOTER RIDERS may soon be encouraged to avoid using the roads as part of sweeping new measures aimed at improving road safety.
Instead, advocates want current bike lanes extended to accommodate individuals who want to utilize the new electric technology. This would provide a safer choice for e-scooters and avoid collisions between riders and cars.
The new tools should be given greater room, according to Jack Samier, general manager of Vol, who spoke to the Sunday Telegraph over the weekend.
He has fought for more space for motorcyclists to ride the new tools safely.
He did warn, though, that road users should be realistic about the viability of adding cycling lanes in the near future.
“As much space as possible should be given to e-scooters, bikers, and walkers,” he added, adding that broader cycle lanes are necessary.
“We certainly want additional space for cycle lanes and larger cycle lanes, but we must be realistic about how practical this is in the short term.”
Riders can only use the new technology on roadways and cycling lanes during the present e-scooter trials.
However, the Liberal Democrats have claimed that e-scooters are causing “lawlessness” on Britain’s roads and pavements.
Many teenagers have taken to riding electric scooters outside of trial periods, and have been spotted doing so on sidewalks and near pedestrians.
The Department of Transportation has endorsed proposals to widen cycling lanes for riders.
They claimed the initiatives were part of “ambitious policies” to reshape England for cyclists and walkers.
“Certainly, we want additional space for cycle lanes and larger cycle lanes,” they stated, “but we must be realistic about how practical that is in the short term.”
E-scooter safety has been a hot topic among campaigners, who have frequently called for additional restrictions to be enacted.
