The engineers at Digital Foundry took the time to test the Ghost of Tsushima on the PS5.
The exclusive PS4 title does not have a complete “upgrade” to Sony’s current-gen device, however, as seen in the video we have embedded above, a relatively easy performance improvement gives it a serious advantage.
Digital Foundry put the game on PS5 through its paces and reports that with almost no dropouts, Ghost of Tsushima runs buttery smooth at 60 frames per second.
The title is capped at 30 frames per second on PS4 and PS4 Pro, by contrast.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this is that a special PS5 update has not been received for the game. Instead, the game simply senses that it is running on a PS5 and activates the framerate automatically to take advantage of the extra strength of the console.
So, even though you play on the PS5, the game’s graphics choices stay the same, providing a choice between framerate and resolution. Digital Foundry, however, points out that it is a waste of time to use the framerate mode on the PS5, since the resolution mode still provides a rock-solid 60fps and a much clearer picture.
Still, Digital Foundry is looking at what the game might mean for a complete PS5 update. In fact, this is still the same game that can be played on the PS4, apart from the framerate boost – nothing else has changed. It’s going to be fascinating to see if Tsushima’s Ghost ever gets a proper remaster. We will certainly not be against it, given how good the game looks to begin with.
