Sony Confirms Next Generation PlayStation VR Is in the Works for PS5

Out of absolutely nowhere (of course), Sony has announced its plans for a next-gen PlayStation VR system for PS5.

While it’s possible to play the current PSVR headset on the new console, it’s a bit of a headache, with all those cables and a special adaptor needed for the PlayStation Camera. However, Sony says it’s building a new VR system for PS5, as we’ve suspected for some time.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony’s Hideaki Nishino calls it an “ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity”. Details are few and far between, but what has been revealed sounds very exciting. Firstly, there will be just one cable between the new headset and the PS5, which is a big improvement on the complex setup of the original model.

The new VR system “enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input”, so hopefully that means any blurriness is a thing of the past.

Perhaps most interesting is mention of brand new VR controllers, “which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics”. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in VR will be excellent.

That’s about all that’s known right now. Sony does say not to expect the new PSVR in 2021, so it’s a little way off, but it’s very exciting the platform holder is continuing to build on what it achieved with the first headset.
