Renewals of driver’s licenses might take up to ten weeks, leaving road users perplexed about the laws.

The DVLA was discovered last month to be failing to keep up with its own backlog, with roughly 60,000 letters arriving every day. Drivers have been warned that the backlog is so bad that it may take anywhere from six to ten weeks for their application to be approved.
For difficult circumstances, such as drivers awaiting medical information to support their application, this could take longer.
Drivers can continue to drive their cars while their new forms are being processed, according to the DVLA.
Drivers, on the other hand, are limited to driving vehicles that they have applied for on their current application or vehicles that have been registered under earlier applications.
Only if the DVLA has received your complete application within the last two months can road users continue to travel.
Drivers must comply with all requirements included on their license, and they cannot be barred from driving.
However, the DVLA advises drivers not to travel until they receive their new application.
Motorists who have not applied for a new license may be punished, therefore this is something they should check on a frequent basis.
The backlog of paper applications is thought to be due to a series of minor disagreements in their Swansea offices regarding coronavirus safety precautions.
The Transport Committee will meet with DVLA officials later this month to discuss the entire scope of the problem.
The DVLA has advised road users to use online services throughout the pandemic to combat the problem.
Last month, Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said that renewing a license online was the “quickest and smoothest” way to do it.
“Throughout the epidemic, the DVLA’s online services have been open and unaffected, and are the quickest and easiest method to renew a driving licence,” she said.
