Each of our editors has produced their own list of the top five PS5 and PS4 titles for 2020, in addition to our staff’s choices for Games of the Year.
It’s Robert Ramsey’s Deputy Editor’s turn today.
The Legend of Heroes: Cold Steel Trails IV.
It’s insane to think it was only last year that the first Cold Steel game was released on the PS4. Since then, all three installments of the compelling JRPG series from Falcom have appeared on Sony’s system, with the story of Rean Schwarzer eventually coming to an end (sort of) in Cold Steel IV Trails. For me, this fourth installment does not quite hit Cold Steel III’s lofty heights, but one of my favorite franchises is still a fantastic and satisfying conclusion.
4. Search of the Dragon XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Era
With the release of Dragon Quest XI S on the PS4, one of my favorite JRPGs of all time got even better. While it’s far from being a new game, I can’t keep it off the list in good conscience. Once again, I enjoyed playing this adventure, and I was very surprised at how new it still feels. It’s always a beautiful ride, complete with a great cast of characters, through an enchanting universe. There’s not much else you can ask for than that.
3. Thirteen Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Honestly, I didn’t really know what to expect from 13 Sentinels, but I was completely blown away by Vanillaware’s new game. It’s got the best story of any game I’ve played this year, and it’s spread across 13 main characters somehow. It’s a very impressive story, one that keeps engaging me months after publication. After only a few hours, even the real-time strategy battles that I wasn’t at all sure about before playing won me over.
An awesome game that was always meant to be missed, but when you get the opportunity, do yourself a favor and check out 13 Sentinels.
2. Tsushima’s Ghost
An open-world game of samurai – just what I always wanted! Another 2020 title that smashed my dreams was Ghost of Tsushima. I’ve always liked the InFAMOUS series, but I’ve never really interacted with it, something that Ghost can’t tell. I had been head over heels in love with this beautiful tale of revenge from the moment I landed my first great parry.
Graphics, music, action—this is one of my favorite PS4 games, and maybe one of my favorite Sony first-party titles over the past seven years.
1. Persona 5 Royal of the Royal
I could rant for hours about how the ideal marriage of style and content is Persona 5 Royal, but over the holidays, no one has time for that. But I’ll get straight to the point: one of the best games I have ever played is Persona 5 Royal. It is a masterpiece, in my opinion – a refinement of an already excellent publication.
Royal’s latest, final act hit me like no other game this year on an emotional level, and that was more than enough to place it at the top of this list. For me, it’s just an uplifting experience that I’m going to play over and over again.
