We adore RPGs. They enjoy RPGs. Everyone loves a good RPG, and for them, 2020 has turned out to be a great year. There really was something for everyone, whether it was re-releases full of fresh content or entirely new experiences that brought existing franchises in new directions. We’ll just have to find out, though, what was the best of the best. Here are the best RPGs of 2020 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
Bronze Trophy: Remake of Final Fantasy VII.
We have lost track of how many times during its release, Final Fantasy VII Remake made us smile like fools, but that’s the power of this surprisingly well-executed remake. Doing the original Final Fantasy VII justice was never going to be easy, but somehow Square Enix managed to recapture the magic while expanding on the universe and beloved characters. In addition, the combat structure is exemplary – a true evolution of the tried-and-true ATB formula of the series. This is just the first chapter of a new saga, of course, so we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Gold Trophy: Souls of a Devil
Demon’s Souls on PS5 is the very same game as the original 2009 game, which means it’s still a pretty good RPG. The setting for some of the most nerve-wracking next-gen gaming currently possible is five enormous and enigmatic worlds, but you can conquer their inhabitants in almost any way you like. There is a large range of weapons and armor in Demon’s Souls to customize your character with, and plenty of stats to boost if you gather enough souls. It’s both the best game on the PS5 currently available and one of the best 2020 RPGs.

Trophy of Gold: Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest is one of the most fun RPGs we’ve been playing for a long time. It takes and incorporates everything we already love about Yakuza – the realistic setting, the brilliant characters, the thrilling tales, the insane side events….
A party-driven battle adventure with turn-based fighting? Yep, and it’s working surprisingly well. With this title, RGG Studio has taken a real gamble, and it is paying off, as it is one of the most memorable and exclusive games of 2020.

Platinum Trophy: Persona 5 Royal Championship
Our Game of the Year 2017 is back and better than ever – despite being a 10/10 masterpiece already. Persona 5 Royal isn’t just one of PS4’s very best RPGs – it’s one of the best ever made Japanese RPGs.
An absolute delight for the senses, and enhanced to a degree that fully obsoletes the original Persona 5. The new Royal finale is amazing, the new characters are great, and it is brought to previously unimaginable heights by the numerous gameplay changes.
