LAND Rover has created a rugged and adventure-ready smartphone – and thankfully, it’s much cheaper than a 4×4.
The £399 Land Rover Explore R is water-resistant, drop-resistant and comes with special apps for the outdoors-minded.
It looks a bit like the years-old (but very popular) iPhone 4 – which you’ll either love or hate.
And it’s supposedly inspired by the new Land Rover Defender, though we’re not entirely sure how.
Part of the comparison is likely down to the phone’s ruggedness.
The handset has an IP68 rating, which means it’s survived being submerged in 1.5 metres of water for over 30 minutes.
It also promises to keep dust (and sand) out, if you’re a regular at the beach…or desert.
Land Rover says the phone survived a 6-foot drop onto steel, which is pretty impressive.
In terms of raw computing hardware, the phone’s specs are pretty middling.
You get a decent 5.7-inch screen with a mediocre HD+ resolution.
But it’s protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6, making it more robust than most.
The phone packs a decent 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which is expandable via a microSD card.
There’s a 12-megapixel Sony dual-pixel rear camera on the back, as well as an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter.
And it runs on Android 9.0, with a promised upgrade to Android 10 – as well as 90-day security patches.
Unsurprisingly, the phone also comes with specialised apps for adventure types.
You get Dashboard 2, which streams customisable live updates for your favourite outdoor activities.
That includes detailed weather and sea info, to keep you safe – or at the very least, dry.
You’ll get instant access to essential tools like an altimeter, flashlight, GPS, your coordinates, a compass, and location sharing.
And you can also download “premium-grade” detailed off-road topographical mapping, courtesy of Ordnance Survey and View Ranger.
As a bonus you get the Explore Hub, which houses popular outdoor activity apps.
The Land Rover Explore R is available to buy right now for £399.
