January 2021 NPD: PS5 Breaks Decade Old Dollar Sales Record

Sony may not be able to ship enough PlayStation 5 consoles to meet demand, but it did get enough units into the United States retail chain to break a decade old dollar sales record.

According to the latest NPD report, the console raked in more revenue in January 2021 than any other system has since the Nintendo Wii in 2009. It was outpaced by the Nintendo Switch in terms of units sold, but this is still a positive result for the next-gen system.

It was a huge month for the industry overall, with total spend up 42 per cent year-over-year, tallying a record $4.2 billion in total. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the best-selling game, but Assassin’s Creed Valhalla continued its spectacular performance, and is now the second fastest-selling entry in the series.

Even more impressively, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales finished in third place, as Cyberpunk 2077 dropped like a rock – from second position in December 2020 all the way down to 18th place, albeit with digital sales data excluded. Hitman 3 failed to make the overall top 20, although its digital sales data is also absent.
