In a safety warning, a driver who refuses to use smart highways labels new roadways as “deathtraps.”
According to someone who has driven every highway in the UK, smart motorways become “deathtraps” when drivers experience automotive troubles.
The road user told LBC Radio that motorists drive “so rapidly” that any problems will force them to strike the back of other vehicles. Due to the significant safety dangers, the retired sales representative now “refuses” to travel on smart highways.
Instead, he only goes on A-roads, despite the fact that it takes “three or four times as long.”
“I’ve been on every freeway in the country,” he declared on LBC.
“I used to drive between 30 and 40,000 miles a year, and I can tell you they’re a deathtrap.
“If you’re in the inside lane and your motor dies or you have to take evasive action, the folks behind you will wind up in your backseat because they’re driving so fast.
“I refuse to travel on them; I currently travel on A-roads and will not do so in the future.”
“Obviously, it takes us three or four times as long,” he added.
“For example, on Friday, we returned from Stoke and it took us six hours to get back.
“However, I would rather to do that than endanger my life on a [smart highway].”
“I’m not sure why they’re called smart highways; they’re anything but.”
Despite authorities saying they understand “ongoing issues” with the roadways, they insisted UK motorways were “among the safest in the world.”
National Highways said in a statement that they had “well-practiced processes” in place to deal with technical issues and mishaps.
