Do you own a travel trailer? What indicators to look for if a thief is targeting your motorhome

Caravans and campers, according to vehicle security experts, are a more attractive target for thieves than supercars and high-end luxury automobiles.

They warn that the high demand for caravans, as well as their ease of theft, make them “appealing to criminals.” Trackershop experts said it was “concerning” that caravan and motorhome owners were not doing enough “due diligence.”

They said that when identity markers were deleted, some caravans without tracking devices were rarely retrieved.

According to data, just a small percentage of drivers have trackers put in their vehicles, with many more failing to install simple alerts.

Caravans, according to Shaun Carse, Managing Director of Trackershop, are a “attractive body for burglars.”

“High-spec caravans can cost up to £35,000, while top-of-the-range motorhomes retail for £80,000+, making them a tempting target for thieves,” he said.

“Criminals are attracted to budget models in the £10-20,000 price range because of the high demand for vehicles and the relative ease with which they may be stolen.

“Apart from the monetary value, many owners would retain priceless items onboard or may have spent months or even years customizing them, implying that the emotional value of a stolen car cannot be quantified.

“In light of this, it is disturbing that caravan and motorhome owners do not appear to be doing their homework when it comes to safeguarding their vehicles.”

According to research, only 13% of RVs and 6% of campervans have trackers fitted.

Meanwhile, alarms are not installed in 54 percent and 45 percent of homes, respectively.

The data, according to Mr Carse, “supports these results,” with vehicles not being “adequately safeguarded.”

He cautioned that gangs and thieves would perceive caravans and RVs to be a “very easy target.”

He did admit, though, that there had been an increase in interest in trackers over lockdown as many drivers sought to preserve their money.

“Even though we’ve seen a considerable increase in demand for motorhome and caravan trackers in the last 18 months,” he said.

“We know from the surging sales figures that there are still vulnerable recreational vehicles out there that aren’t properly safeguarded.

“This might make them a very easy target.” Brinkwire Summary News”.
