In case you missed it, HBO is working alongside Sony and Naughty Dog to turn The Last of Us into a TV show. Charting the story told in the first game, the project is in the works right now, with Neil Druckmann writing the series with Chernobyl scribe Craig Mazin. While there’s been no confirmation of who will play the lead roles of Ellie and Joel, we do now have a director attached to the adaptation.
Kantemir Balagov is confirmed to be directing the pilot episode of the series.
The Russian director is best known for Closeness and Beanpole, the latter of which came close to an Oscar nomination in 2019. Both works have received numerous other awards, and are serious, dramatic pieces. Seems appropriate for The Last of Us, then.
At this point, it’s not known if he will be director for more than just the pilot.
Meanwhile, Sony’s Jim Ryan has stated that this series, along with the Uncharted movie, are “just the beginning” of the company branching PlayStation out beyond games.
