WWE icon Ric Flair taken to hospital after being attacked by Randy Orton as legend Mickie James returns to RAW

WWE legend Ric Flair was taken to hospital after being punted in the head by Randy Orton on Monday Night Raw.

The 71-year-old was stretchered out of the Performance Center after the cruel attack by his long-time protege.

Flair has been by The Viper’s side in recent weeks on the show but after running his mouth against Kevin Owens last week, he set up a match for Orton against KO last night.

The two produced a great encounter in the main event, with Orton eventually claiming the win after hitting an RKO.

However, there was still much more to come after the veteran picked up the three count.

Orton had some strong words for the Nature Boy, branding him a liability and saying his ego forced The Viper into the showdown with Owens.

He went on the claim his mentor is a junkie for the spotlight, with Flair responding by admitting Orton’s words hurt but he respected him so much and wants him to be the one to beat his and John Cena’s joint-record of being a 16-time world champion.

The pair embraced in a hug before Orton struck a low blow on Naitch and then striking him in the head with a punt, which was not caught on camera due to the lights going out courtesy of new group Retribution’s antics.

Orton began whispering into the KOed Flair’s ear before WWE Champion Drew Mcintyre, who defends his belt against The Viper at SummerSlam, raced to the ring to prevent any further damage being inflicted.

WWE later posted a post-show video on YouTube showing footage of Flair being loaded on to a stretcher and being taken out of the arena and to hospital.

That finished off an action-packed episode of Raw that also featured Dominik Mysterio being brutally beaten with kendo sticks by Seth Rollins and Murphy.

And there was also a surprise when icon Mickie James appeared in a backstage segment.

The 40-year-old has not appeared on WWE TV since last summer due to tearing her ACL.

But she will return to the ring next week after being interrupted by Lana and Natalya during her interview last night.
