World Athletics sets August 15 deadline for Russia to pay £4.74m or be expelled from the sport

World Athletics have told Russia they will be expelled from the sport unless they pay a $5million (£3.76m) fine for state-sponsored doping and a further $1.3m (£980,000) in costs by August 15.

The Russian Athletics Federation has been suspended since November 2015 and the reinstatement process was frozen earlier this month after they missed the initial payment deadline of July 1.

If they miss the new date in little over a fortnight, they will face a complete exile from the sport, including the termination of the ‘neutral’ system which allows vetted athletes to compete.

Rune Andersen, chair of the taskforce overseeing Russia’s reinstatement, said he has received a guarantee from Russian sports minister Oleg Matytsin that the payment would be made.
