Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to select a permanent manager as soon as possible to avoid missing out on their top targets during the summer transfer window.
After Ruben Amorim was fired in January, United is thinking about their long-term possibilities. Michael Carrick will take over as manager for the rest of the season.
However, with the former midfielder ensuring the team’s Champions League comeback, there is rising support for Carrick’s permanent appointment.
United has to strengthen their depth because they have a tough summer ahead of them. According to Daily Mail Sport, the club wants to spend £150 million on midfield reinforcements alone. However, Rooney claims that the lack of clarity in the dugout is endangering their prospects of acquiring their primary objectives.
In an interview with Match of the Day, he stated: “To compete in the Premier League and Champions League next season, which is where they want to be, Manchester United needs to invest in players in the summer.” They must make investments.
Wayne Rooney has pushed Manchester United to choose their new manager as soon as possible.
Although Michael Carrick is the front-runner to take the position permanently, United is not in a rush. “I don’t think there’s any denying that they have to strengthen the squad.” Now, the first thing I would ask if Man United wanted to sign me as a player would be, “Who is the manager?” Is the management interested in me? Therefore, I believe that the manager needs to be made clear.
Rooney helped his old teammate get the long-term position.
“I think the club needs to announce him quickly because they need to get players in,” he continued. To strengthen that team, they must acquire players.
Carrick is the clear frontrunner to be hired on a full-time basis, but United executives are not in a rush to decide and will consider all of their choices over the coming weeks.
However, on Friday, Carrick said, “No, really not,” dismissing the idea that he may find the circumstance unpleasant. I haven’t been concerned by it, whether or not it has been discussed.
It hasn’t altered my approach. It honestly hasn’t affected me at all because I’ve been confident in the work we’re doing, working with the players, and managing the club.
“I think it’s pretty obvious that it will be a process, obviously from the outset in terms of finding someone to fill the position in the end.”
After leading his club to 10 victories in 14 games ahead of Saturday’s trip to Sunderland, Casemiro and Matheus Cunha are the most recent United players to publicly state that Carrick should remain in the position.
“As a manager or coach, you’re only a leader of a group if people want to follow you,” Carrick continued. It’s not something you can discuss a lot; rather, it’s demonstrated by actions.
However, Rooney worries that if they stay too long, United will lose out on their main targets.
Therefore, the most crucial thing is when I sense the lads’ support and sense that they are all connected, not so much with me as they are with each other on the pitch.
The best thing is that they have demonstrated that in many ways. Seeing them work as a team to put it together is satisfying.
Opponents of Carrick’s full-time position cite the decline in performance following United’s 2019 three-year contract extension to interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Carrick, a first-team coach under Solskjaer, stated, “A lot has happened before in all sorts of different ways, whether it’s interim getting the job, not getting the job, whether it’s having success or not success.”
Therefore, I believe that the past is the past. I’ve gained knowledge from both my personal experiences and the history. It’s intermingled throughout football history, so I don’t think it gives you a clear picture of what’s happening today and what needs to happen next to compare other things and how it’s done in the past.
“I just think that’s the situation we’re in right now; that’s not me personally.”
Carrick acknowledges that he has considered how he would lead the team in the upcoming season even if he must wait for a definitive decision.
“Leaving it in a position at the end of the season where, if it were me or someone else, it’s there to take even further is something that has obviously crossed my mind,” he remarked.
I believe it’s normal for you to be thinking about that. There are always things that we might be able to do a little bit better, improve upon, or even take a different approach. That’s simply a part of changing.
