Wayne Rooney calls Thomas Tuchel’s persistent rejection of Trent Alexander-Arnold “mind-boggling.”
The former England and Manchester United great has commented on the Three Lions manager’s choice to leave the defender out of his most recent rosters, as the Real Madrid player appears unlikely to be selected for the World Cup.
For matches against Uruguay and Japan in March, Ben White recovered from the cold, but Rooney finds it difficult to comprehend Tuchel’s perspective.
Speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney stated, “I think Ben White is a really good player, but for him to be in the squad and play ahead of Trent, I find it mind-boggling.”
The 27-year-old Alexander-Arnold overcame injury problems to establish himself as a regular in Alvaro Arbeloa’s team, but he was unable to perform at his highest level as the Spanish powerhouses battled both on and off the pitch.
Nearly a year ago, he earned his final England cap off the bench against Andorra.
Wayne Rooney, pictured at the Champions League semi-final between PSG and Bayern Munich, finds it incomprehensible that Thomas Tuchel does not have Trent Alexander-Arnold in his plans for England.
And since then, Tuchel has chosen Jarrell Quansah, White, Reece James, Tino Livramento, and Djed Spence over him, so parachuting him into the World Cup group this summer would be a significant U-turn.
Additionally, Rooney would choose James for the US campaign.
“We don’t need our full-backs to be the most attacking, we need them to defend,” he continued.
Even though the Man United left-back seemed unlikely to make the squad, Rooney continued by stating that Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, and Luke Shaw would complete his back four.
He continued, “We have attacking ability at the top end of the pitch.” “Keep the balance and let the attacking players win the games; we don’t need them to be bombing forward.”You wouldn’t say the boys in there were the best defensively anyhow.
One of Tuchel’s most well-known choices during his tenure as England’s manager has been Alexander-Arnold’s prolonged absence, and Rooney is by no means the only critic.
Gary Lineker said in March that it might be a personal choice.
“I think there’s something personal because there’s no argument in football,” Lineker stated on The Rest is Football podcast. “You know I’m obviously a big admirer of Trent.” He needs to increase your chances, even if it’s from the bench, therefore I don’t see how he can’t be on that team.
Alexander-Arnold makes his Real Madrid debut but is left out of his country’s squad. “I think there’s something about Trent Alexander-Arnold that Tuchel dislikes.” I’m simply speculating as to what it might be—whether it’s his attitude or his lack of defensive prowess. That makes no sense at all, so there must be something in it.
“He will provide you the magic you need to unlock things, as you have seen in these kinds of games. Therefore, I don’t understand it. I’m not sure if it’s his attitude or anything else, but I also think it’s offensive to bring players in. Here, for instance, we discuss the Ben White scenario. He has no desire to represent England. We don’t really know what went on at the camp or why he didn’t play, so I wouldn’t judge him on that.Tuchel claims he’s called him up and brought him in. That’s OK, but I don’t see how he can still be ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The players do within the squad, and you know there were reports about massive fallout and him not being treated very well. It’s incredibly offensive to a truly elite full-back, in my opinion. That’s my opinion, then.
Alexander-Arnold responded to his absence from the most recent England squad in March by posting the caption “Madrid” on Instagram. “Y nada mas” means “Madrid.” and nothing more.
Tuchel responded, “I think it is a very hard decision that we took,” when asked about Alexander-Arnold’s recent exclusion from the squad. There is no question about his skill, his career, and what he can offer teams. “We developed a slightly different game model when he wasn’t in camp in September, October, and November; it was built on intensity and positivity, even on the profile of the right full-back on overlaps, underlaps, very intense.” “It was a slightly different profile of players in camp who performed so well.” We only stay with these men.
