Watch Jack Rodwell almost score a screamer on his Wanderers debut as the underdog steals the show in the derby.
JACK RODWELL is back with a bang – or, to be more precise, a banger.
The former England midfielder came dangerously close to scoring a 30-yard winner in his Western Sydney Wanderers debut against Sydney FC in a derby draw.
After a 16-month layoff, the 30-year-old returned to Wanderers last week. He previously played for Everton, Manchester City, and Sunderland.
Alana Licate, a Western Sydney native, played a key role in securing Rodwell’s transfer to a club led by former Wolves and Wales midfielder Carl Robinson.
Rodwell showed why he was once England’s brightest new hope in a 0-0 draw in the A-League.
He capped off an outstanding performance with a long-range left-footer into the top-right corner with seven minutes remaining.
An arching tip-over from visiting keeper Andrew Redmayne thwarted Rodwell’s dream start to his career in Australia.
From 2011 to 2013, he earned three caps as an all-around talent who was equally at home in central defense, but his fortunes have waned in the last eight years.
Injury and questions about Rodwell’s attitude hampered his development.

And his demise was summed up at Sunderland, where he chose to sit on the bench for a large salary rather than move on as the club slid down the leagues.
He reappeared on the scene with Blackburn Rovers before joining Sheffield United two years ago during their successful return to the Premier League.
He came on as a substitute for the Blades in a 1-1 draw at Burnley on July 5, 2020.
When Rodwell joined the Wanderers earlier this month, he was “really excited.”
“I’d been looking for a chance to play in Australia for a few months, and with my wife being from Western Sydney, the Wanderers seemed like the perfect fit,” he told the club’s website.
