Valtteri Bottas acknowledges it’s “not easy” to join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Valtteri Bottas discusses his five-year partnership with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Valtteri Bottas has revealed that working with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for the past five seasons has been “not easy,” despite the seven-time world champion dominating the title since 2014, and believes it has motivated him to improve over time.
At Mercedes, Bottas has yet to defeat Hamilton in a single season. Since joining the team in 2017, the 36-year-old has won five titles alongside the Finn.
Despite his continuous success for the team, the 31-year-old is currently fighting to keep his seat at Mercedes, with rumors that George Russell is likely to replace him.
Nonetheless, Bottas believes Hamilton’s performance has aided him in becoming a better driver in recent seasons.
In an interview with hypebeast.com, Bottas remarked, “Being Lewis’ teammate is not easy since he’s pretty fast, both in qualifying and especially in the races.”
“It motivates me to work harder and always try to delve deeper or try new things because I know I have to give it my all if I want to beat him.
“To be honest, it’s also been extremely pleasurable; we’ve been able to work really well as a team, and we’ve managed to achieve wonderful things as a team over the previous four years, so that keeps me working hard.”
After Nico Rosberg startled the Formula One world by announcing his retirement only days after winning the 2016 world title, Bottas stepped in.
Despite their tumultuous relationship at Mercedes, Rosberg is the only driver to have beaten Hamilton during the team’s dominance in the title.
“I had a lot of huge shoes to fill,” Bottas continued.
“You’re taking over for a player who had just won the world championship before deciding to retire. I was the next in line and the squad chose me, so there was definitely some pressure in this sport.
“However, it was a significant step forward in my career, and I needed to ensure that I could use the chance, perform well, and secure a new contract for the following year.
“I’ve had to do that pretty much every year because you have to prove yourself in this sport.
“I believe that as time passes, you begin to.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
