UK Sport are reluctant to step in and fill the funding breach of rugby sevens despite the RFU pulling the plug.
The England men’s and women’s sevens squads have been told they will no longer be offered full-time contracts as the RFU cuts costs in the wake of Covid-19.
Most of Team GB’s Olympics sevens teams are made up of England players, with the men winning silver at Rio 2016 and the women finishing fourth.
The RFU have approached UK Sport about funding sevens ahead of next summer’s Games in Tokyo and conversations between the two bodies are ‘ongoing’.
However, UK Sport have never invested in major professional sports which feature in the Olympics — rugby, tennis, golf and football — and it will take a significant step change for them to start doing so.
