The sale of Man City’s Jack Grealish could be a Harry Kane hint.
The reigning Premier League winners have paid Aston Villa £100 million for Grealish, but it is bad news for Tottenham striker Kane, who has been linked with a move away from the club.
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Jack Grealish, who will set a new club record, but it could be bad news for Harry Kane. Grealish has agreed to a six-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, with City paying Aston Villa a new Premier League record fee of £100 million.
City has made their first signing of the summer transfer window with the arrival of the England international.
Pep Guardiola has made attacking areas one of his major priorities for the summer as he prepares to defend his Premier League championship.
Guardiola’s mouth-watering array of alternatives will undoubtedly be boosted by the addition of the 25-year-old.
Guardiola had intimated in April that paying such a large price for an attacking player in this window would be unthinkable.
“Listen, we’re not going to sign any striker at these costs — we can’t afford it, it’s impossible. That is not going to happen,” he stated emphatically.
“Every club faces financial difficulties, and we are no exception. Gabriel [Jesus] and Ferran [Torres] are two players that have excelled in this position this season.
“With the circumstances in the world, the economic troubles in world football, there’s a good probability we won’t sign any strikers for next season.”
While Grealish isn’t a striker, Guardiola was certainly mistaken in believing that the champs couldn’t afford such a high sum.
Wantaway Tottenham striker Kane, who refused to show up to training this week in an attempt to force a trade, was regarded to be their second top summer target.
City will have to pay another record-breaking sum to attract Kane to Manchester, with Spurs reportedly requesting a fee of over £150 million.
City have previously had a £100 million proposal for the England captain rejected, with Spurs owner Daniel Levy prepared to demand a Premier League record.
However, by announcing Grealish’s signing, the defending champions have intimated that Kane’s request to join will not be granted.
The former Villa player has been given the number 10 shirt at City, which was left vacant by Sergio Aguero’s departure.
That’s bad news for Kane, who has worn that shirt number for the entire time he’s been with Tottenham.
