Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra has revealed he doesn’t want to see Lionel Messi win a record seventh Ballon d’Or and would instead like to see the award head to the Premier League
Former Manchester United star Patrice Evra has revealed he is sick of Lionel Messi winning the Ballon d’Or.
Instead, Evra wants to see a Premier League player win the award rather than Messi claim a seventh triumph later this year.
A Premier League player hasn’t claimed a Ballon d’Or triumph since Cristiano Ronaldo at the Red Devils in 2008.
And since 2008, only one Premier League player has found themselves on the podium, Virgil van Dijk in 2019, with Real Madrid and Barcelona dominating the top three spots.
But Evra is “sick” of seeing the same players claim the mantle of the world’s best player.
“In my opinion, this Ballon d’Or is for [N’golo] Kante or Jorginho… I’m sick of giving it to Messi,” Evra said, via the Daily Mail.
“What did he win last year? Okay, the Copa America. With Barcelona what did he do?”
Kante and Jorginho both played in central midfield for the European conquering Chelsea side, who beat Manchester City in May at the Estadio do Dragao.
Jorginho then went one better by claiming a Euro 2020 triumph with Italy, and the 29-year-old’s iconic penalty style helped the Azzurri past Spain in the semi-finals.

However, PSG’s boss Mauricio Pochettino disagrees with Evra: “The Ballon d’Or should go to Messi without any doubt.
“And if I didn’t coach Messi, I would still say Messi.
“I answer with my heart. I always say what I feel. On the podium with him would have to be [Robert] Lewandowski and Cristiano.”
