The first black female astronaut will go to the International Space Station on a historic mission.

Crew 4 will be the fourth group of astronauts on the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft expedition to the International Space Station, and Watkins hopes her journey into space will inspire others.

The first black female astronaut will be launched into orbit on a mission to the International Space Station.

Jessica Watkins will join the crew and live on the ISS starting in April of next year.

The Maryland native will work as a mission specialist for six months on the trip, which will be her first in space.

Crew 4 will be the fourth group of astronauts on the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft voyage to the International Space Station.

She hopes that her journey into space would inspire others in the black community.

“I hope that all young girls, particularly young girls of color, who are interested in exploring space feel empowered to do it,” Jessica added.

“All I can say now is that I hope young ladies around the country feel the same way.”

NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren and Robert Hines, as well as Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency, make up the mission’s other three crew members.

They will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will conduct scientific research in the ISS’s microgravity laboratory, according to NASA.

Jessica has worked in astronomy-related labs before, having spent time on the science team for the Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity and as a postdoctoral associate at the California Institute of Technology’s Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences.
