The biggest growing threat to Lewis Hamilton’s title hopes this season, according to Mercedes’ CEO.
Toto Wolff has spoken out at a critical time for Mercedes, when rivals are gaining ground.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ chief executive, has identified Sergio Perez of Red Bull as one of the main challenges to the team’s title chances this season. The Mexican finished third in the French Grand Prix, barely a few seconds behind race leaders Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
Perez had a poor start to his first season with Red Bull after leaving from Racing Point after two years.
However, after teammate Max Verstappen’s high-speed failure in Azerbaijan, the 31-year-old snatched his first Red Bull triumph.
He has since finished third behind another Verstappen triumph, his fourth of the season, extending his lead in the drivers’ standings.
Mercedes has won seven constructors’ titles in a row, so Wolff has reason to be concerned after Red Bull’s first and third places in France outperformed Mercedes’ second and fourth, putting them in front of Mercedes in the constructors’ standings.
Toto Wolff provides an update on Lewis Hamilton’s contract and explains his Mercedes teammate’s “doubt.”
“The two-stop was a hazard for us because Perez was in the way and we got it [strategy]wrong,” Wolff said after the race on Perez’s effect.
“If Perez hadn’t been in the window, we would have chosen for a second stop, at least with one vehicle, and then put the other Red Bull car in a tight situation.
“At that point, there are four cars racing against each other. He wasn’t in contention for the podium at the start, but they were allowed to go long, which proved to be the best plan for returning to the podium.”
As he pursues a record-breaking ninth world championship, veteran Lewis Hamilton is not having an easy time of it.
Although Hamilton is commonly regarded to have the faster car, the duel with Verstappen is still close at the top, with the Dutchman holding the lead.
The 23-year-old previously stated that he would be “two tenths faster in the identical vehicle,” adding fuel to the fire as the two prepare to battle for the rest of the season.
With Perez currently away, Verstappen has benefited greatly from having the better wingman this year. “Brinkwire Summary News”.
