Rangers are set to become the best team in Europe, according to new research by bettingexpert.com.
Their number-crunchers predict that Steven Gerrard’s side will better Celtic’s 106-point haul in the 2016/17 season which stands as the record points total in top European leagues.
Using Rangers’ current points-per-game of 2.8, the Ibrox side are on-course to reach 107 points after 38 games this season, a total greater than any other top league side on the continent has amassed.
Outside of Scotland, Juventus previously held the record for the most points in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues when accumulating 102 points on their way to winning the 2013/14 Serie A title.
Real Madrid and Barcelona reached 100 points in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 season respectively, a feat Manchester City also achieved in 2017/18, placing Steven Gerrard in elite company with Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola and Brendan Rodgers.
Closer to home and away from the top leagues, Barry Town won 105 points during a 40-match season in 1996/97 and 104 points a year later, and Reading won the 2005/06 Championship with 106 points.
For all of Celtic’s flaws this campaign, they’re predicted to reach 84 points, which would have been enough to win the league in 14 of the last 21 seasons, excluding the reduced 2019/20 campaign.
A bettingexpert spokesperson said: “Rangers are doing something very special this season in snatching the title back from Celtic and ending their chances of 10 in a row, but the achievements don’t stop there.
“Not only will Steven Gerrard’s side beat Celtics record 106-point season, but they’re on-course to become the most successful team in Europe and become the team with the most points of any side in Europe’s top leagues.”
