Steven Gerrard’s touching tribute to Philippe Coutinho demonstrates the quality of player Aston Villa has.
With the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho, ASTON VILLA have scored a major coup.
Steven Gerrard was instrumental in Aston Villa’s loan signing of Philippe Coutinho, arguably the club’s most important transfer ever.
The former Liverpool captain reportedly called Coutinho in a desperate attempt to persuade him to join the Midlands despite interest from other Premier League clubs.
Coutinho, on the other hand, appears to have had little time to consider his options once the possibility of reuniting with Gerrard arose.
During their time together at Anfield, the pair had a close and unique relationship, with Coutinho taking his game to the next level alongside his new manager on his way to becoming a world star.
Coutinho was one of the few Liverpool players, along with Jordan Henderson, to stand up and be counted after Gerrard’s emotional departure for LA Galaxy in 2015.
He’d become a focal point in Jurgen Klopp’s side, assisting Liverpool in regaining Champions League status.
Arsenal striker movement, Aubameyang’s problem, Tottenham and Vlahovic are among Taylor’s Tuesday transfers.
Philippe Coutinho, please accept my warmest welcome!
Philippe Coutinho will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Aston Villa after agreeing to terms with FC Barcelona.
But, in January 2018, when Barcelona made their fourth offer for the playmaker, he too would embark on a tearful farewell.
This time, a deal worth around £142 million – including add-ons – was too good to pass up.
Klopp and the Liverpool board of directors had done everything they could to keep Coutinho, who made it clear that playing for Barcelona was every South American boy’s dream.
That was something Gerrard was quick to acknowledge when asked for his immediate reaction to Coutinho’s departure, but instead of criticizing the Brazilian’s decision, he praised his former teammate’s quality and mindset.
