Newcastle’s new owners, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, are on the verge of sacking Steve Bruce – with several managerial targets already being linked

Steven Gerrard has dropped a hint over his stance on taking over at Newcastle, who are believed to be set to sack Steve Bruce.

The Magpies were taken over during the international break by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

And one of the first orders from the new owners is to bring in a coach with them looking to gain favour with the supporters.

Several managers have been linked including Antonio Conte, Lucien Favre and Frank Lampard.

But one of the top choices is Rangers boss and Liverpool legend Gerrard, who led the Scottish side to an unbeaten season last year in the Premiership.

The 41-year-old was asked about the Newcastle situation and he admitted that he has been keeping an eye on the situation.

He said: “I think it’s interesting, what’s happening at Newcastle. If anyone deserves a break it’s the Geordie fans. But I don’t get involved in speculation.”

Gerrard is in his fourth season in charge of Rangers, having led them to the title last season ahead of arch-rivals Celtic.

And while there has been heavy speculation over Bruce’s situation at Newcastle, the ‘Gers coach has insisted he does not want to cross a friend.

He added: “I don’t really react or get involved in any kind of speculation, especially when there’s someone who I have the utmost respect for sitting in that job.

“Sitting in these positions, you know, I wouldn’t like people to be speculating about my job.

“For me, I am in a very big job and a very big role here which I am very much fully focused on.

“We’ve got a top of the table clash at the weekend and it’s a game I am very much looking forward to.

“I’ve certainly got one eye on Newcastle in terms of Brucey getting his 1,000th game. He’s a great character of the game, he’s someone who I have a personal relationship with and I have the utmost respect for him.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing him getting his 1,000th game, I think it’s a mammoth achievement, so congratulations to him at the weekend.”
