St Johnstone issue further pitch update ahead of Celtic clash at McDiarmid Park

St Johnstone have confirmed that today’s Scottish Premiership match against Celtic will go ahead as planned.

Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall have battered the Perthshire area over the last week, but grounds staff have ensured that the pitch is in a playable condition.

The Perth outfit made use of their undersoil heating system throughout the week and also used heavy duty covers on the pitch.

The club confirmed on Friday that there would be no pitch inspection and despite a late flurry of snow that is still the case.

Saints boss Callum Davidson told earlier this week how he had to muck in to clear a section of the St Johnstone astro turf so his team could train.

He said: “We want to keep a bit of snow on it. Obviously with the drop in temperature that will help it a bit.

“We trained today. With all the staff upstairs we had a shovel and we cleared an area of snow.

“The good thing was with the snow so heavy it has actually insulated the astroturf. We managed to get a 50 x 30 area to train on.

“We had a good session today and we will just wait and see tomorrow what is going on.

“It was actually quite therapeutic shovelling the snow off the astroturf. I enjoyed it.

“If we want to get a good training session we might as well get it done.”
