Jürgen Klopp says the position of Liverpool at the top of the table at this stage means little, but after stuttering to a point at St James’ Park on Wednesday, a trip to Southampton gives the champions an opportunity to quickly set the record straight.
Liverpool was unable to get through a draw against West Bromwich Albion and had little chance against Newcastle, but managed before Christmas to score seven goals against Crystal Palace.
Southampton should be a stronger opponent despite not winning any of their last four games and Danny Ings would be willing to score against his former side.
Following a time of self-isolation, Ralph Hasenhüttl will return to the Saints’ bench.
