Billy Gilmour, a midfielder for Scotland, has acknowledged that it would take some time to process his World Cup heartbreak after being sidelined by an injury.
In the first half of Scotland’s 4-1 victory over Curacao at Hampden last Saturday, Gilmour was substituted due to a knee injury. The team then took off for America the next day.
The 24-year-old Napoli player was seen leaving the team hotel on crutches and had scans right after the game.
After witnessing his childhood ambition of competing in a World Cup brutally taken away, he was comforted by manager Steve Clarke, captain Andy Robertson, and the other players.
Tyler Fletcher, a teenager from Manchester United, has subsequently replaced Gilmour in the squad, but he is adamant that he will follow the side from home.
During Saturday’s victory over Curacao, Billy Gilmour is hurt.
After being eliminated from the World Cup, Gilmour uses crutches to depart the Scotland squad hotel.
“I haven’t got the words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” Gilmour wrote on social media.I was so close to fulfilling a boyhood ambition of mine—playing in a World Cup—but an injury has now prevented me from doing so. It’s been difficult for me to comprehend. “Thank you so much for your support and kind messages over the past few days; they mean the world to me and haven’t gone unnoticed.” “I’ll see you all back doing what I love soon, but until then, let’s get behind the team and cheer them on.” Scotland, hurry up!
Since landing in the United States, Clarke and his team have been acclimating in preparation for their first World Cup in 28 years.
In an attempt to improve on their performance against Curacao, they will play Bolivia in their final warm-up game in New Jersey on Saturday night.
On Sunday, June 14, the Scots begin their Group C campaign against Haiti in Boston. They will next play Brazil and Morocco.
