Ambitious Italian side Benevento are exploring the possibility of signing free agent Daniel Sturridge.
The Serie B champions are looking to strengthen their squad as they prepare for their return to the top flight next season.
They had lined up a deal for former Chelsea and QPR striker Loic Remy but he failed a medical and they have turned attention to 30-year-old former Liverpool striker Sturridge.
Their interest was confirmed by club president Oreste Vigorito who said: ‘Sturridge would be an honour for any Italian team.’
Coached by former Juventus and AC Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi, Benevento are keen to bring in experienced players and have also asked about Fernando Llorente.
Sturridge will assess all of his options and take time over his next career decision after initiating talks to leave Trabzonspor by mutual consent earlier in the season.
Now available on a free transfer, numerous clubs have pitched to sign the England international and former Champions League winner. He is open to all countries though he still believes he has a point to prove in England.
Aston Villa were interested in signing the 30-year-old at the end of last season but could not get a deal over the line.
However, Sturridge is waiting to see if Villa stay in the Premier League on Sunday and then hopes the club make another move in the coming weeks.
Villa already have one striker called Sturridge on their books in the shape of his highly-rated 18-year-old cousin DJ Sturridge who is the son of former Derby County forward Dean.
The Sturridge family still hold a dream that Daniel and DJ can one day play in the same Premier League team together and hope Villa can make that possible.
