Ruslan Zakharov, a Russian speed skater, died in a truck accident in Khabarovsk at the age of 23.
RUSLAN ZAKHAROV, 23, died in a vehicle accident while out for a morning run in Khabarovsk at the age of 23.
The Russian speed skater rose to notoriety in his homeland after receiving a slew of prestigious awards as a promising youngster.
Medals at the Junior World Championships were among these accomplishments.
Following the tragic news, the Russian Skating Union issued the following statement, as reported by Inside the Games: “Ruslan Zakharov, a medalist at the Junior World Championships, a winner of the Junior World Cup in speed skating, and a multiple winner of the Russian Championship, died as a result of the tragic incident.
“He was 23 years old at the time.
“Ruslan’s family, friends, and relatives are deeply mourned by the Russian Skating Union.”
The incident occurred about 6:10 a.m., according to a statement from the Khabarovsk police traffic department.
“While driving a Toyota Dyna, the driver collided with a pedestrian who was traveling in the same direction on the carriageway in the presence of sidewalk,” it continued.
According to MKRU, Zakharov was out for a morning run along a curb when he was struck by a truck traveling in the same direction.
Zakharov had a serious head injury and was brought to the hospital for treatment right afterwards.
He died in a hospital’s intensive care unit.
Zakharov won bronze medals at the Junior World Championships of the International Skating Union twice.
And he would add to his achievements by winning the 2017-18 Junior Grand World Cup men’s 500m.
