Roger Federer is rumored to be using Andy Murray’s Wimbledon exit as motivation to leave it quits.
Andre Agassi’s excellent performances at the end of his career, according to Darren Cahill, will inspire Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
As they near the end of their careers, Roger Federer and Andy Murray are expected to gain added motivation from their achievements at Wimbledon this week. After a series of ailments, Federer has through to the third round, while Murray has returned to Centre Court for the first time since 2017.
Murray began his campaign by defeating Nikolaz Basilashvili in a grueling four-set victory.
The former world No. 1 fought back against Germany’s Oscar Otte before losing in the third round against Denis Shapavolov.
Injuries have plagued Federer in 2021, and he is just playing his second Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2020.
Murray and Federer’s love for the game, according to Darren Cahill, is what keeps them going.
Cahill told the New York Times, “Every athlete’s why is a little different, but what is a common thread with any top athlete still competing in their twilight years is a sheer love of the game.”
Agassi was forced to retire after the 2006 US Open, but Cahill believes that similar “memories” will motivate Federer and Murray to continue.
“While it was a battle, the memories he provided us against Andrei Pavel and Marcos Baghdatis at the past US Open still feel like yesterday,” Cahill remarked.
“They’ll be around for a long time. Andy had a taste of it last night, and it has the potential to motivate him further. Roger is in the same boat.
“If these games are significant to these great champions, then these moments are essential to us, and we should always respect the effort. You may criticize the tennis, but you can’t criticize the why.”
Federer faces Cameron Norrie in the third round as he tries to keep his Wimbledon title hopes alive.
In 2021, the Swiss has only played a few games as he strives to regain his form and conditioning.
Murray, too, has tried to find some form as he tries to put his career behind him in the best possible way.
Murray is set to compete in the Tokyo Olympics after losing in the third round.
