Rematch between Anthony Joshua and Vitali Usyk: Will Anthony Joshua face Usyk again after his loss? Details about the AJ clause.
On Saturday night, Anthony Joshua was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk, but will the two fight again?
On Saturday night, Anthony Joshua’s three heavyweight world belts were stripped from him for the second time in his professional boxing career when he lost to Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Will the duo now compete in a rematch? Following a riveting duel between the two, Usyk defeated the Briton by a score of 117-112, 116-112, 115-113.
Usk, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, now holds the IBF, WBA, and WBO heavyweight titles.
He pondered: “This means a great deal to me. The fight happened just as I had predicted. There were times when Anthony pushed me hard, but nothing out of the ordinary.
“Because my corner urged me not to, I had no intention of knocking him out. I tried to punch him hard at first, but then I focused on my task.
“With this fight, the only thing I wanted to do was worship Jesus Christ.”
Inflicting Joshua’s second career defeat after Andy Ruiz Jr., the Ukrainian delivered a boxing masterpiece in north London.
“I want to go home,” Usyk said in the ring after all three judges ruled in his favor. “I’m not thinking about the rematch right now.”
However, it is quite likely that the duo will fight again in early 2022, as Joshua is said to have a clause in his contract that allows him to fight twice.
In June, Eddie Hearn said: “There will be a stipulation. All of the terms have been agreed upon, including that which was previously agreed upon. When you talk about a rematch clause, you’re also talking about the most important battle the boxer could ever have.
“‘That’s a horrible thing,’ some people think. It’s genuinely beneficial on sometimes.
“Andy Ruiz got a lot of money for his rematch, but it’s still a huge opportunity for him. If Oleksandr Usyk wins, he will be in line for a rematch with AJ.” More recently, he added: “Yes, [a rematch clause]will be in place. In that sense, it’s a two-fight situation. If he wins, he’ll move on to face the winner of Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder.” And, after losing to Usyk, Joshua expressed his thoughts on the “Brinkwire Summary News” in his post-fight press conference.
