Relegation duel in the Bundesliga: Schalke loses 0:1 against Bielefeld

Even Schalke’s coach of the century, Huub Stevens, can’t work miracles. “Königsblau” lost the Bundesliga relegation duel against Arminia Bielefeld without a sound.

With Schalke’s coach of the century Huub Stevens should come the miracle cure on Saturday (19.12.2020). Not so. With the interim coach hired for two games, the last-place team in the table lost the Bundesliga relegation duel against Arminia Bielefeld 0:1 (0:0) in depressing fashion. The “Königsblauen” have now gone an incredible 29 league games without a win. The negative record of Tasmania Berlin from the 1965/66 season is only two games away.

Fabian Klos scored the decisive goal (53rd minute) for the East Westphalians, who extended their lead over the Gelsenkircheners to six points. Schalke lost four league home games in a row for the first time in the club’s history and has not scored in its own arena for 420 minutes. In addition, it was Bielefeld’s first win in Gelsenkirchen since the Bundesliga scandal – though a bribe had literally been involved in Arminia’s 1-0 win on April 17, 1971.

Klos: “We deserved to win
Bielefeld’s match-winner Klos told the Sportschau microphone after the final whistle: “I simply also believe that of two teams that are not playing their best soccer at the moment, we were clearly the more active with the better scoring chances. That’s why we deserved to win.” Stevens told Sportschau, “I already believe that the team gave everything.” But he conceded, referring to the individual players, “They also made mistakes again, which is why we were punished. There also comes the moment again that they win again.”

Only one training session is not enough
Not much wanted to change the supposed Schalker Heilsbringer after only one training session. Nor did he: Amine Harit and Rabbi Matondo moved to the substitutes’ bench, Hamza Mendyl and Alessandro Schöpf into the starting eleven. The “growler from Kerkrade” had primarily relied on talking to the unsettled players – and had apparently not been able to build them up psychologically effectively.

Schalke weak at the front and back
His team was harmless offensively and shaky at the back against Bielefeld, who had recently lost four of their last five league games. The Arminen also had the first mini chance, but Christian Gebauer (19.) shot wide of the goal. Three minutes later, DSC keeper Stefan Ortega had to intervene for the first time, but Benito Raman’s shot was not placed well enough.

Córdova only hits the woodwork
Goal-scoring scenes were also rare in the following period. Fouls, fierce duels and misplaced passes dominated the basement duel. Bielefeld had more of the game and, with five corner kicks by halftime, also entered the opponent’s penalty area more often. Sergio Córdova (44th) had the lead on his feet shortly before the break, but under pressure from Ozan Kabak he only hit the right corner of the goal.

Schalke started the second half with more courage offensively and had a good chance right away. A shot from distance by Nassim Boujellab (47th) was fisted away by Ortega, defender Cedric Brunner then involuntarily headed the ball towards his own goal, Bielefeld’s goalkeeper just wiped the ball away.

Hardly any fightback from “Königsblau
The lead for the East Westphalians through Klos was nevertheless highly deserved. After Nathan de Medina’s long cross, the Schalke defense was almost afraid to touch the Bielefeld goal scorer. There was little to be seen of a Schalke revolt in the aftermath. S04 struggled, but that was all. On balance, Bielefeld was even closer to a second goal than Stevens’ team was to an equalizer.

And so, in addition to the great depression, hopelessness is increasingly spreading among the S04 supporters – and rightly so. In their current condition, the team and the highly indebted club look as if they cannot be saved and have no chance in the fight for relegation and economic survival.

Schalke now plays in the DFB Cup at regional league team Ulm 1846 on Tuesday (22.12.2020) at 6.30 p.m. In the new year, the Bundesliga continues. Schalke takes on Hertha BSC on Saturday (02.01.2021) at 18.30. Bielefeld receives Borussia Mönchengladbach three hours earlier.
