Rafa Benitez handed Everton transfer blow as Napoli boss confirms Kalidou Koulibaly stance

This summer, the Toffees are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements.

Everton manager Rafa Benitez has suffered a setback as Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti stated that Kalidou Koulibaly would not be sold during the summer transfer window. After taking over as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, Benitez is eager to reshape his squad, but it appears he will have to look elsewhere for a new defender.

Everton are looking to add to their squad this summer after finishing in 10th place last season under Ancelotti.

Given his ties to Liverpool, Benitez has a lot of work to do to win over fans, and one method to do so is through the transfer market.

The Toffees have been connected with a slew of players this summer, but have yet to appoint a new manager since Benitez was appointed on June 30.

Everton are apparently in talks with Asmir Begovic to replace Jordan Pickford as their backup goalkeeper, but supporters will be hoping for more interesting arrivals.

Everton have made a proposal for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, according to Calciomercato. Koulibaly has also been connected with Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City, according to Corriere dello Sport.

If that’s the case, then what Napoli’s manager said in a press conference on Friday will irritate Benitez and Everton’s recruitment team.

“One of the vice-captains in this squad is Koulibaly,” Spalletti stated.

“He’s staying in Napoli, as far as I’m concerned.” It’ll be difficult to find a replacement for him; all of his teammates adore him, and I’ve noticed he’s always talking on the field.

“Everyone in the locker room respects his presence.”

Koulibaly has two years remaining on his Napoli contract and Corriere dello Sport reports that the Italian club will only sell for £42.7million (€50m).

Potential suitors, however, are unwilling to pay more than £34 million (€40 million) for the 30-year-old Senegalese international.

Everton have also been linked with Juventus defender Merih Demiral, who is also a Tottenham target.

The Turkey international is expected to depart Juve this summer, according to Tuttosport, and the Italian club is asking £30 million (€35 million) for his services.

While Everton are yet to get off the mark in the transfer market, Benitez is happy with the work on the training pitch so far in pre-season.

“Everything is proceeding as planned. Normally, you would say.”Brinkwire Summary News” while meeting with a team for the first time.
