After West Ham’s late equaliser against Arsenal was disallowed on Sunday, former Manchester United and Manchester City custodian Peter Schmeichel was furious.
After Leandro Trossard gave the Gunners a 1-0 lead on minute 83, Callum Wilson believed he had saved a point for the Hammers in stoppage time.
However, after a protracted delay, his goal was disallowed because his teammate Pablo was found to have fouled David Raya during the build-up.
After watching videos of the event for a few minutes, VAR official Darren England sent referee Chris Kavanagh to the screen to examine it in more detail.
Arsenal went on to win the game and take a five-point lead over Pep Guardiola’s team to get closer to winning the Premier League when Kavanagh decided that Pablo placed his arm across Raya’s chest, preventing him from catching the ball or parrying it away.
Schmeichel believed the umpires made a grave error, despite the fact that it was one of the most dramatic moments in Premier League history.
After West Ham’s late equaliser against Arsenal was disallowed, Peter Schmeichel was furious.
Callum Wilson believed he had tied the score, but Pablo (No. 19) was found to have fouled David Raya.
He raged on Viaplay, saying, “That decision today, it’s just so wrong on so many levels.” “The fact that Arsenal would never be at the top of the league if that were a free kick is what truly enrages me.
“That’s how they’ve scored so many goals by holding, blocking, and doing all kinds of things, and then we get to this point… it takes VAR five minutes.”
“It takes five minutes for Darren England, the VAR official.” He repeatedly initiates the replay. That alone raises a lot of questions about that choice. It is not possible for it to be a free kick.
“I think it’s so wrong, I just don’t understand why that’s a free kick all of a sudden, because it hasn’t been for any teams throughout the season,” Schmeichel went on.
“That decision today is just so wrong on so many levels, and all of this is just crazy.”
Arsenal would have only been three points clear of City, who still have a game to play, if they had drew.
However, West Ham is now even closer to relegation, with the Hammers trailing Tottenham by a point despite having played one more game, and the title battle is still firmly in their hands.
After the game, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen expressed his understandable frustration by criticising the length of the delay that resulted in the VAR overturn.
“We’re going to feel hard done by because we’re on the receiving end,” he stated. Outfield players are not as protected as goalkeepers. In the box, there is a lot of gripping and wrestling. There will be tussles, therefore the keeper must anticipate contact.
Goalkeepers would undoubtedly be fouled and denied decisions if we went back through every single game. If you’re going to give it, you have to give it to every single person who occurs on a weekly basis. You’ll notice something after five minutes of staring at the screen. Where’s the consistency? You’ll find something if you search long enough, I’m sure. Do I believe this is the correct choice? No.
Chris Kavanagh was shown on screen after VAR examined the incident for a few minutes.
Later, West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo broke through the debate with a respectful assessment of what had transpired in those last seconds and how it had been permitted to occur in the first place.
“The decisions are inconsistent,” he stated. Out there, it’s almost like a wrestling match. Nobody knows what constitutes a foul. The referees are perplexed. It isn’t always the case.
Everyone is attempting to determine the boundary between what constitutes a foul and what does not. Everyone is perplexed. We have no right to pass judgement. They are responsible for finding a solution.
In the meantime, it should come as no surprise that Mikel Arteta concurred with the authorities and commended Kavanagh’s courage and mindset.
“I think I’ve realised today how big and challenging the referee’s job is,” Arteta continued. Because you’re discussing a moment that has the power to determine the future of two enormous clubs that are battling for their lives in order to accomplish their goals. And there’s a lot of pressure.
The referees made a call that, in my opinion, is both quite courageous and in line with what they have been discussing all season. I have therefore been critical where necessary.
And I have to commend them today, at least for allowing a referee to make the final decision. To give him the clarity he needs to make the correct decision, away from the lights and the mayhem. And when you consider the action from that perspective, I believe there is a clear mistake.
Additionally, the goal must be disallowed because it is a free kick. Congratulations, as they made a significant decision under really challenging circumstances.
