Next month, Red Bull will choose between two drivers to be Max Verstappen’s 2022 teammate.
Sergio Perez is yet to be offered a contract extension by Red Bull beyond his current one-year deal.
By the conclusion of the approaching summer break, Red Bull will have decided on Max Verstappen’s teammate for next season, according to Helmut Marko. The Dutchman is now paired with Sergio Perez, who signed a one-year deal to replace Alexander Albon in the driver’s seat at the start of the season.
Perez has had a promising start to his Red Bull career, winning one race and finishing third in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
In the fight of the second drivers, the Mexican is 12 points ahead of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas.
His achievements have also aided Red Bull’s rise to the top of the Constructors’ Championship table, ahead of the Silver Arrows, in the first nine races of the season.
Perez and Verstappen will be looking for another great team performance at this weekend’s British Grand Prix in order to prevent Hamilton from grabbing the chequered flag in front of a 140,000-strong home audience.
Despite his strong start, Perez’s contract expires at the end of the season, and there has been no definite progress on a new deal as of yet.
When asked if the 31-year-old will return as Verstappen’s teammate next season, Marko told Motorsport.com that a decision would be made before the end of August, when the Formula One summer break comes to an end.
“I would guess we’ll make our driver decisions during the summer break,” Marko remarked.
He also hinted that Pierre Gasly could be on his way back to Red Bull in the near future, citing the Frenchman’s great performances with AlphaTauri as a reason.
After a disastrous half-season in 2019, he was demoted from the senior squad, but has since established himself as one of the most consistently excellent drivers on the grid.
Gasly, who has scored points in every race he has run this season. Marko appears to agree with his recent declaration that he is currently the best version of himself and that he is more than ready for a second shot with Red Bull.
