Newcastle United “deserve” to be taken over, but incoming owners are being urged to “give Steve Bruce a chance.”
EXCLUSIVE: Former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Ian Rush feels the club’s new Saudi owners should give Steve Bruce a chance to lead them out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Newcastle’s new owners, according to Ian Rush, should give Steve Bruce a chance.
Mike Ashley sold the Magpies to a Saudi-backed consortium for £305 million last week, with the intention of making the club a perennial competitor at the top of the Premier League and in the Champions League.
The future seems bright on Tyneside for the first time since the days of Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson, but it appears to be a future without Bruce, the club’s controversial current manager.
Fans have long been dissatisfied with the former Sunderland manager, and he is largely considered to be one of the first casualties of the new era.
Brendan Rodgers of Leicester City and Lucien Favre of Borussia Dortmund have both been mentioned as prospective successors, although Bruce is still in charge at St James’ Park.
Rush, 59, is best known for his time with Liverpool, but he also had a brief stint with Newcastle in the late 1990s, scoring two goals in 14 appearances and appearing in the Champions League against PSV.
The Welshman couldn’t hide his pleasure at the club’s takeover, speaking exclusively to Brinkwire Sport thanks to Gambling.com, and believes Bruce should be given a chance to prove what he can achieve.

“They’ve earned it,” Rush says. “I don’t think they’ve won anything in 30 years or whatever, but every time you go there, and every Saturday when I was there, it was a packed house.”
“The audience is simply incredible. Because they deserve it, I’m all dolled up for them.
“However, you must remain cautious because nothing should be expected overnight.” It’ll take time, but at least they’re on the right track now, and as a one-year ex-Newcastle player, I’m delighted to see the takeover.
“Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job in my opinion, and I believe he deserves a chance.” I believe he is deserving of the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities.
“He’s worked extremely hard in terrible circumstances. You can’t change something overnight. The news is summarized by Brinkwire.
