Murray expects more top players to follow women’s world No 1 Barty and withdraw from US Open

Andy Murray does not expect that women’s world No 1 Ash Barty will be the last player to withdraw from the US Open next month.

He believes there will be others to follow, and reports on Thursday night suggested that one player has already tested positive at the women’s Palermo Open, which is due to mark the return of official tour tennis at the weekend.

‘I think we will see it quite a bit. I have heard some of the top male players aren’t going to play,’ said Murray, who still plans to travel after he has finished this week’s Battle of the Brits team event.

‘I would expect that would be the case. It’s everyone’s personal decision. If they don’t feel safe, and don’t feel comfortable, traveling and going there and putting themselves and their team at an increased risk, then it’s completely understandable.

‘All of the players will have some reservations and it’s whether or not you feel comfortable taking that risk.

‘My feeling is once we are inside that bubble they created, we will be okay. It’s more the international travel, and getting there which I will be a bit concerned about it.’
