Goalkeepers can win Champions League finals. They may also lose them.
If it weren’t for Thibaut Courtois, who is perhaps the best goalkeeper in the world, Real Madrid would not have defeated Liverpool in Paris in 2022. Real Madrid took home the trophy after Courtois defeated Mo Salah despite the Spanish team’s worse performance that evening. Once more.
Naturally, the same clubs had faced off in Kyiv in 2018. The German, Loris Karius, made a disastrous contribution to Liverpool’s lack of readiness to win the most desired title in Europe. After Real won that game 3-1, Karius’ career never fully recovered.
Therefore, it goes without saying that David Raya of Arsenal will have a huge night on Saturday in Budapest. Given that, oddly, he hasn’t yet been promoted to first selection for the Spanish national team, it’s possibly the biggest of his career.
These days, Raya is the top goalie in the Premier League. Jordan Pickford of Everton is Raya’s closest contemporary rival, as Alison Becker of Liverpool and Emi Martinez of Aston Villa are both trending backward, if only slightly, and Gianluigi Donnarumma of Italy isn’t quite providing the complete security to the Manchester City defense that Pep Guardiola had hoped.
He has benefited from Arsenal’s defense. This season, Mikel Arteta’s squad allowed an average of just 2.5 shots on goal per Premier League game, which is, predictably, the lowest in all five of Europe’s major leagues.
David Raya, Arsenal’s top goalkeeper, has been essential to the team’s success this year.

However, over the past two seasons, Raya has clearly improved. He is currently thirty years old, which is around when most elite goalkeepers reach their prime. And an important choice Arteta made early in the 2023–2024 season is responsible for his goalkeeping’s authority, confidence, and athleticism.
In September 2023, following a match against Everton’s Goodison Park, the Arsenal manager attempted to justify his choice to promote his summer loan acquisition above his top player from the previous season, Aaron Ramsdale.
Arteta didn’t have the guts to be really honest, saying that he would switch up his two keepers throughout the season and would even think about switching one halfway through a single game, much like a father trying to decide between two favorite sons.
There may have been a need for public clarification at that time. Because everyone could see that, four league games into the season, Arteta had dropped his number one, but he had the courage to admit it.
Ramsdale made exactly two league appearances over the remainder of that season, both against Brentford, Raya’s parent team, against whom he was prohibited from playing.
According to a reliable Arsenal insider, Mikel made a big decision that truly damaged him. In actuality, he had done nothing wrong, and he loved Aaron. Simply put, a team occasionally needs an update to reach its goals.
It must be done without emotion, even if the increase is only 5%. Mikel determined that the team needed this, and he was correct, wasn’t he?
Since then, the two goalkeepers’ professional paths have diverged significantly. While Ramsdale suffered a season of relegation at his former club Southampton and is currently on loan at Newcastle, Raya has established himself as one of the top keepers in the world.
Mikel Arteta’s trust in the Spanish goalie has been more than repaid.
After leading Arsenal to their first championship since 2004, Arteta is flung into the air by his teammates.
In September 2023, he was England’s number two, and his demotion created a commotion. Even his father made some remarks on social media that might have been better kept quiet. However, Ramsdale was never going to be in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup team this summer.
Arsenal has just moved on, and sometimes that’s the only option. Throughout his six and a half years at the club, Arteta has shown himself to be skilled at making these choices, and the great majority of them have turned out to be the right ones in terms of time and clarity.
Kieran Tierney, a Scottish defender, was captain at one point and supported Arteta throughout his difficult early years.Tierney left after Oleksandr Zinchenko became available for an upgrade. For a while, Zinchenko was also useful as Arteta, who is currently playing football at Ajax, tried to adopt some of City’s winning mindset.
There are more well-known names on the list of people who have been driven out of their homes by the chilly wind of Arteta change.
Granit Xhaka, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Mesut Ozil are notable. A few of those choices have repercussions within Arsenal. For instance, Aubameyang scored crucial goals to help Arsenal win the FA Cup during Arteta’s debut season, which lasted for just over 18 months.
A large portion of this is due to the authority Arteta was given at Arsenal practically from the beginning, and trust levels have only increased as a result of the progressive improvements he has made to the club’s culture and, in fact, its football.
Arsenal will pitch a team that embodies the standards and attitude of its boss on Saturday in Budapest. Arteta continued to make significant decisions that caused controversy even in his own locker room as Arsenal won their first Premier League championship in twenty years.
At right-back and left-sided attack, Ben White and Leandro Trossard were thrust forward. White’s comeback to fame was cut short by injury, but it was nonetheless genuine. Meanwhile, Myles Lewis-Skelly, a 20-year-old left-back, has unexpectedly put pressure on Martin Zubimendi, a £50 million acquisition from last summer, for his spot in the center of midfield.
It was a tough decision to drop Aaron Ramsdale for Raya a few years back, but it has more than paid off.
Arteta has an unstoppable coach’s mind. It frequently searches for answers to issues that haven’t yet surfaced, as was the case with Raya three summers ago.
The fact that he won’t be Spain’s World Cup goalie is peculiar. Joan Garcia of Barcelona and Unai Simon of Athletic Bilbao are favored by national coach Luis de la Fuente. Raya’s lack of participation in La Liga is thought to be the only reason he suffers.
De la Fuente has most likely earned the right to oversee such an aberration because he is a coach who has won European Championships. Before his nation starts its World Cup campaign against Cape Verde in Atlanta, Raya has one last chance to establish a claim in the Puskas Arena tonight.
Raya will probably be the center of attention once more if Arsenal manages to defeat PSG and win the Champions League.
