Mikel Arteta decides whether or not to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Mikel Arteta makes the final decision on whether or not to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

Since October, JACK WILSHERE has been training with Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed reports that the club could re-sign Jack Wilshere to help alleviate their midfield woes.

Wilshere is currently training at London Colney to regain his fitness following his release from AFC Bournemouth last year.

Despite a few immediate midfield issues in Arteta’s squad, many have joked that he could be in line for minutes in the new year.

Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny could be out for over a month while representing Ghana and Egypt at the African Cup of Nations, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been loaned to AS Roma until the end of the season by Arsenal.

The only players who have experience playing as holding midfielders are Albert Sambi Lokonga and Granit Xhaka, which is inconvenient when Arteta’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system calls for two.

Wilshere, on the other hand, will not be wearing an Arsenal shirt for the remainder of the season.

Despite the 30-year-old’s presence in first-team training since October, Arteta has ruled out offering him a playing contract.

“I think I was very clear with the situation with Jack and the role he was going to have,” he told reporters. “We will continue in the same way.”

Arsenal are, however, actively looking to strengthen their ranks this month if a suitable opportunity arises, according to Arteta.

“We have to maximize every window in many different ways because of the amount of things and the way we want to evolve the squad,” Arteta explained.

“We’re on high alert.

We know exactly what we need to do, so Edu and his team are working very hard.

“Whether we can do it in January or in the summer depends on other factors, but we’re working on it.”

“If it’s the right player and we can afford it and do what we want, we’ll talk about it and make the best decision we can.”

“We are available.”

With fixtures in three different competitions coming thick and fast, Arteta will be sweating over his midfield situation.

To make matters worse, Xhaka was not seen in training ahead of the FA Cup Third Round match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

It could open up more opportunities for Charlie Patino, a teenage sensation who made his senior debut against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup last month and scored.

But, given his current situation.
