Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s leaving manager, may be able to offer Jurgen Klopp a great transfer gift.

During his time as Liverpool’s sporting director, Michael Edwards has been responsible for a slew of successful signings.

Michael Edwards has notified Liverpool that when his contract expires next summer, he will step down as the club’s sporting director. And he could be able to give Jurgen Klopp the ideal transfer present.

In 2011, Edwards joined Liverpool as head of analytics, and five years later, he was promoted to his current position.

Since moving up the Liverpool hierarchy, he has thrived and been assigned with a variety of tasks, including general football development, player discovery, acquisitions, and retentions.

In 2018, Edwards negotiated a £142 million deal from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho, which is the largest fee a British club has ever received for a player.

Just days previously, Edwards had agreed to pay Southampton £75 million in return for Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk is perhaps the defining signing that converted Liverpool into world-beaters, with the Reds winning the Champions League, Premier League, and Club World Cup within three years of his arrival at Anfield.

Edwards has demonstrated his ability to spot talent in the transfer market by assisting the club in acquiring Mo Salah, Alisson, and Diogo Jota.

And it’s the transfer policy he’s managed in the opposite direction that really distinguishes him as one of the world’s top sporting directors.

In 2017, Edwards negotiated a £26 million fee with Crystal Palace for Mamadou Sakho, and in 2019, he negotiated a £19 million agreement with Bournemouth for Dominic Solanke.

Edwards then persuaded Sheffield United to pay £23.5 million for Rhian Brewster, who has struggled to make an impression at Bramall Lane.

When the time comes for Edwards to leave Liverpool, his legacy will be evident to everybody, and he will be difficult to replace.

And if Edwards can persuade Kylian Mbappe to join Liverpool when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires next summer, he might give Klopp the present of a lifetime.

Mbappe is regarded as one of the top strikers in the world and has been linked with a summer transfer to Real Madrid.

However, Mbappe’s contract looks to have stagnated. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
