Mercedes upgrades are a must for Lewis Hamilton, who calls the rework “difficult.” Max Verstappen sets the pace.
Mercedes must bring certain enhancements to races, according to Lewis Hamilton, if they are to have a chance to beat Red Bull this season.
As Max Verstappen extended his lead in the driver’s standings by 18 points in Austria, Lewis Hamilton said Mercedes must bring some enhancements to races if they want to beat Red Bull this season.
With a lights-to-flag victory at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, Verstappen dominated the Styrian Grand Prix, increasing their lead in both the team and driver standings heading into round nine.
Meanwhile, Hamilton was forced to play catch-up as a sluggish start off the line put him under pressure from Lando Norris in the McLaren and Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull.
The British driver held on to second place, but Verstappen was unstoppable in front, crossing the line 35 seconds ahead of the Mercedes driver.
Hamilton, speaking to Sky Sports F1, was perplexed by their speed.
“I did say it was around a quarter of a second, and I believe it was probably around three or four tenths on average. “They had some very incredible speed,” Hamilton added.
“There was nothing I could do; I was giving it my best. I’m not sure where they got all their speed, but I believe it was all over the place, especially on the straights.
“So they’ve obviously made some significant progress in the previous few races, and we don’t have a good solution for it.”
Toto Wolff reaffirmed on Saturday that Mercedes has no plans to depart from its existing development pace for 2022 by cutting back on resources this year.
Red Bull, on the other hand, has been bringing upgrades to races, and Hamilton believes Mercedes won’t be able to compete if they don’t follow suit.
“We haven’t brought any upgrades, and I can’t recall the last time we had an upgrade,” Hamilton continued.
“They’ve clearly brought the engine improvement and some other component of the package, and it’s barely eking them out a win.
“And while there’s a long way to go, there’s not going to be much we can do at that speed.
“I’m not sure, we just have to keep pushing.” “Brinkwire Summary News”: “I have faith in the team that we will be able to find.”
