Mercedes’ George Russell gets a ringing endorsement from Lewis Hamilton, who calls him “the future.”

During his most recent press conference, Lewis Hamilton praised his fellow Briton.

As the Formula One contender appears to be creeping towards Mercedes’ second seat for next year, Lewis Hamilton has spoken highly of George Russell. Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton’s current teammate, has been the subject of intense speculation about his own future, albeit a move to Alfa Romero now appears to be his most likely next step.

With Kimi Raikkonen confirming his retirement at the end of the season, the Finn has been widely touted as Raikkonen’s replacement at Alfa Romeo.

Russell would then be able to make the transfer from Williams to Mercedes, which has been rumored for some time.

Russell has already raced for the Silver Arrows, putting in a strong effort while filling in for a Covid-injured Hamilton in Bahrain last year, only to see his dreams of victory dashed by a pitstop mishap.

Last time out in Belgium, the 23-year-old scored his maiden F1 podium, with continuous rain assuring an unusual afternoon in which drivers had to settle for half points based on their qualifying positions after only two laps of non-competitive racing.

Russell’s departure to Mercedes had been reported by Sportsmail to have gone down like a lead balloon in the Hamilton camp, but the seven-time champion’s last press conference suggests the contrary.

“I honestly believe it will be good,” he remarked ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. George is certainly a gifted driver, in my opinion.

“I’d say his qualifying run was perhaps the sole highlight from last week [at Spa]; it was incredible.

“I believe he’s humble, and I think he’s got a fantastic approach, and I’m sure being British helps in terms of communication.

“He’s the future,” says the narrator. He’s one of the sport’s brightest prospects.

“I think he’s already showed fantastic driving thus far, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do so, so what better place to do it than with a wonderful squad like this?”

“George has already been on the circuit with us, he has already raced with the team, and he has already worked in the background while Valtteri and I worked in the past. As a result, I believe he is well-versed in the environment.

“I’m in a different situation if it turns out I’ve acquired a new teammate.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
